Further Information on the challenge

this post will be continually updated as more questions are asked and answered. feel free to leave your own burning questions in the comments!

  • "What are the deliverables at each stage of the battle?"
    • This is fairly fluid. The bare minimum is an objectively finished image of your character but, you are encouraged to include your sketches and development process. You could also include further studies, prop sheets, orthos, a Bio (dont give too much information away! let your partner fill in some blanks!) or anything else you feel helps make your character complete.
    • when posting please do it at or around the due date and time as closely as possible. please include your competitor's images and links to their works. lets all help each other gain exposure and have a good time.
  • "Why is the first round in secret?"
    • We want to ambush our partners with their assignment. when you provide your protagonist image you are actually giving them their art direction and instructions. as this is a competition you don't necessarily want to give them any extra time to create their images.
  • "Is the second round secret?"
    • NOPE! feel free to share WIPs throughout the final 2 weeks, or : "Nemesis Phase"
    • please refrain from actively giving your opponent more direction during this period! Sure you can see what they are doing but you dont want to help them more than the initial submission already does.
  • "Why two weeks? Thats WAAAAAY too long/short"
    • Because we all have busy schedules but, two weeks per phase is easily enough time to make the bare minimum submission. If you have a bunch of free time why not try adding more supporting art, prop and ability studies etc. maybe read a book. you should read more... seriously... we're all pretty embarrassed by your lack of general information over here.
  • "can I use old artwork?"
    • No. This challenge is meant to be all new material. thats why we have 2 weeks!
  • "So-and-So does this super real/super cartoonish/super abstract thing i don't do. do i have to match her/his/it's style?"
    • Short answer: Kinda, yeah.
    • long answer: We don't expect people to suddenly be capable of all styles of work. That being said, you should give your best effort to make it as close as you can to your partner's style. EX: if you get a drawing of Kratos for the protagonist you probably shouldn't submit Dr. Robotnik as his nemesis.
    • long answer continued: If you cant match style at least match tone. a good example for this would be the concept art of Matt Rhodes for mass effect Vs. their in game appearance. its the same design but the styles are wildly divergent. design matters most here.
  • Whats the point?
    • Short Answer: FUN
    • Long answer: We hope to exercise our ability to adapt and create to things that are not clearly defined. These fuzzy boundaries force us to be more creative and dig deeper into our tool boxes to make it work. this will also frequently push us outside our comfort zone style-wise.
  • "What do i win?"
    • Well, hopefully a sense of pride and self worth. Maybe the knowledge that you faced a challenge head on and didn't back down. Maybe you learned a little bit more about yourself and the world. Or, Maybe, you gained some new friends and followers and had a good time while sharpening your tools and leveling up.
    • Stop being so greedy...we all talk about it when you aren't around. its getting old.
  • "Who owns the art after im done?"
    • you do! we in no way want to take your art away from you.all we want to do is showcase it on the blog with your competitors ( a blog which is in no way monetized) if we would like to use any of your images for promotion of the event we will ask you and give full credit if given permission.
    • please feel free to make tutorial, sell prints etc.  if making a tutorial of the nemesis phase make sure to ask your partner for permission to include their image as your design reference. make sure everyone gets credit for their amazing work!
